The book "Velocious Evolution" by Ron Saetermoe is a science fiction novel that delves into themes of human progress, technological advancement, and existential dilemmas. Through the perspective of Dr. Steven Keene, a professor at UC Berkeley, the narrative explores the intersection of sociocultural evolution and personal loss. The story blends academic discussions on how societal pressures drive cultural changes with a plot involving an extraterrestrial being, Tim Lewis, who offers a potential cure for cancer in exchange for Earth's water.

Keene meets Dianna for a morning run at Tilden Park, where they joke about science and lawyer talk. After warming up, they run various trails and then head to a health club for a swim. Keene reflects on the need to organize his efforts regarding Tic, an alien friend, and a miracle cure. Struggling with planning, he realizes the importance of preparation, especially with politicians.

When the global debate over the Water Deal reached a climax at the United Nations, countries presented their views, with some supporting the trade for a cancer cure and others opposing it due to environmental concerns. The process highlighted deep divisions, both within the UN and in public opinion, leading to protests and violence worldwide. Despite the chaos, the deal narrowly passed with votes in favor.

The book primarily raises questions about the moral and ethical implications of technological advancements and the unknowns of alien contact. It portrays a protagonist grappling with grief, the limitations of human knowledge, and the desperate hope for a miracle. The writing style is accessible, focusing on character-driven storytelling that mixes intellectual exploration with emotional depth, making complex scientific and philosophical ideas digestible for the reader. I have not found any dislikes in this book. The book combines speculative fiction with a thoughtful reflection on what it means to be human in a rapidly changing world. That's why I give this book 5 out of 5 stars.

The book "Velocious Evolution" is ideal for readers who enjoy science fiction with a blend of academic inquiry, emotional depth, and ethical dilemmas. It's particularly suited for those interested in themes of human progress, technology, and extraterrestrial encounters. The editing of the book is fair; it is without even an error.
