Review of We are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies
The fantasy novel We Are Voulhire: A New Arrival Under Great Skies is the creation of an author's imagination, blending action, drama, sardonic humor, and a hefty dose of bloodshed, magic, and politics. The plot unfolds in the "Lands of the Princes," a region made up of three distinct countries ruled by three separate thrones. These thrones and the rulers who sit upon them are the principal players in the story. Even a cursory examination of their motivations reveals a mix so toxic that conflict and war seem inevitable.
Galen Bray is an orphan from the Lands of the Princes. With the help of Rowan, he escapes this dismal place and arrives in Magnum Caelum, where he is set to manage his late uncle's forge. Meanwhile, King Wilhelm of Voulhire is trying to atone for past mistakes and create a brighter future—particularly for the townsfolk of Hillport. But how can he achieve this when his enemy, Meldorath, remains at large? What role does Meldorath play in these unfolding events? And what part does Galen Bray have in this larger narrative?
This book is extremely thrilling. The reader is left guessing about how everything will unfold or what will happen next. The scant action that occurs here is set in motion by Matthew Tysz, and the rest of the series may come off as a bit unpredictable. But that's what makes the narrative interesting; you're drawn in and want to know what happens next. This series has many strong points, one of which is tension. Another key aspect is the element of mystery—you really don't know what's coming. Personally, I like to have some idea when I'm entering a world, especially if that world is fantasy.
My favorite character is Lord Eldus. He is both respectful and humble, carrying himself with the kind of dignity one would expect from someone of his rank. However, even with my high expectations, I was distressed to see that he didn't turn out quite the way I thought he would. To better understand what I mean, read this book. You'll be drawn into the story and see what kind of character Lord Eldus truly is.
One aspect of this book that I didn't care for, despite really loving many others, was the introductory feel of this first installment. It seemed to be setting up the rest of the series, and at times, I felt like the author was using this episode to sum up each character. After that, there wasn't much to the overall story in this section.
I didn't notice any grammatical errors, so it's fair to say the editing is top-notch. There's a lot of cursing, and while there aren't any explicit scenes, some of Gowan's sexual comments are quite offensive. I think this would be a good novel for high school or college students who can handle a decent amount of swearing and a few (but not too many) sexual comments. I give it 5 out of 5 stars. I enjoyed it and would read the next installment.
I especially recommend this to readers with mature minds because of some graphic and violent scenes. This is definitely a story within the fantasy genre. Don't let the unusual terminology used in the book deter you; there's a glossary at the end to help with that.
