We are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies by Matthew Tysz is a remarkable entry into the fantasy genre, presenting readers with a captivating narrative set in a thoughtfully designed realm. The novel begins with Galen Bray, a refugee from the war-ravaged Lands of the Princes, who travels to the peaceful kingdom of Voulhire to claim his inheritance, a forge left to him by his late great uncle. Galen’s hope for a new beginning is quickly eclipsed by the intricate relationships and concealed threats of his new environment.

The story’s strength is its detailed and complex world-building. Voulhire serves not merely as a setting but as a dynamic and lively world complete with its own rich history, politics, and magical elements. The author paints a vivid picture of this kingdom, from the bustling streets of Magnum Caelum to the tense political landscape. The narrative unfolds from multiple perspectives, allowing readers to see the kingdom from various angles and understand the broader implications of the characters' actions. This layered approach enriches the plot and maintains the reader's interest as the story progresses.

One aspect of the book that I liked was its exploration of character development. The author skillfully balances the personal growth of Galen with the broader political machinations at play, creating a narrative that is both intimate and expansive. The multiple perspectives offered in the book provide a broader understanding of the kingdom’s complex dynamics, enhancing the reader’s engagement with the story. The supporting characters contribute additional layers of intrigue and conflict that enhance the narrative.

The book’s pacing is intentional, enabling the author to gradually build suspense and advance the plot in a manner that feels natural. Although some readers may initially find the slower start a bit challenging, it ultimately contributes to the story's depth and complexity. The text was expertly edited with no notable errors. There is nothing to dislike about this book.

I rate the book 5 out of 5 stars because its exceptional world-building, detailed character development, and compelling plot make it a standout entry in the fantasy genre. The seamless integration of magical elements, coupled with the thoughtful exploration of political and social dynamics, ensures a richly engaging read. I recommend this book for those who enjoy intricate plots involving magic and political intrigue. Fans of high fantasy looking for a new series with a blend of personal growth and expansive world-building will find this novel especially captivating.
