We are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies by Matthew Tysz takes readers on a journey through a richly imagined fantasy world where magic, power struggles, and personal quests intersect. The story begins with Galen Bray, a young man who inherits a small business in the kingdom of Voulhire from his late uncle. Escaping the horrors of the war-torn Land of the Princes, Galen arrives in Voulhire with hopes of starting a new life. However, he soon realizes that the kingdom is not as peaceful as it seems. As he settles into his new role, Galen becomes entangled in a web of political intrigue and dark magic, where every choice he makes could have far-reaching consequences.

The novel masterfully intertwines multiple storylines, each told from the perspective of different characters, such as Lord Eldus, a nobleman sent to bring order to the troubled town of Hillport, and Lord Meldorath, a powerful and enigmatic figure with his own agenda. Through these characters, the author explores the complexities of power, loyalty, and the human condition. The detailed descriptions of the kingdom's landscapes, coupled with the author's skillful storytelling, create a vivid and immersive reading experience. The plot is both intricate and engaging, with twists and turns that keep the reader guessing until the very end.

One of the aspects I enjoyed most about the book was the way the characters and their relationships were developed. Galen's journey from a naive young man to a more worldly and aware individual was particularly compelling. The dynamics between the various characters, such as the bond between Galen and Rowan, his mentor, added depth to the story. The author's descriptive writing style also stood out, painting a clear picture of the world of Voulhire and making it easy to visualize the scenes.

While the novel was an excellent read, some readers might find the pace a bit slow at the beginning, as the author takes time to establish the world and its characters. However, this slow build-up pays off later in the story, as it allows for a more immersive experience. The book was perfectly edited, with no errors that detracted from the reading experience.

I would give this novel a rating of 5 out of 5 stars. The novel is a well-crafted fantasy tale that offers a rich and detailed world, complex characters, and a plot that is both thought-provoking and entertaining. It is a must-read for fans of fantasy and those who enjoy stories that delve into the intricacies of power and morality. Given the mature themes and some instances of violence, I would recommend this book to adult readers rather than younger audiences.
