We are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies by Matthew Tysz introduces us to a world full of magic, political intrigue, and complex characters. The story centers on Galen Bray, a young man fleeing the devastated Land of Princes, a place torn apart by war and starvation. He arrives in Voulhire, a prosperous and seemingly peaceful kingdom, to claim the inheritance left by his recently deceased uncle. Galen’s excitement about starting a new life quickly turns to uncertainty as he learns about the brewing conflicts in his new home. With the guidance of Rowan, his uncle's enforcer, Galen begins to settle into his new role as a blacksmith. However, as he digs deeper into the mysteries surrounding his uncle’s death and the growing tension in Voulhire, Galen finds himself caught in the crossfire of a much larger struggle involving mages, kings, and ancient forces.

The narrative of We are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies is a carefully woven tapestry of different storylines that eventually converge. Matthew Tysz does a fantastic job of building the world of Voulhire, blending elements of fantasy and sci-fi to create a setting that feels both familiar and otherworldly. The novel is rich in detail, with descriptions of the various cities, political structures, and magical realms that make up the kingdom. The story is told through multiple perspectives, giving readers a well-rounded view of the events and the different characters’ motivations. This approach helps to create a deeper connection with the characters, particularly Galen, whose journey from an outsider to a key player in Voulhire’s future is compelling to follow.

I was particularly drawn to the character development in this book. Tysz does an excellent job of making each character feel real and relatable, even in a world filled with magic and fantasy elements. I found Galen’s growth throughout the story to be believable and well-paced. The bond that develops between Galen and Rowan is one of the highlights of the book for me. Rowan’s loyalty and wit provide a nice contrast to the darker elements of the story. I also appreciated the way Tysz handled the political intrigue in Voulhire, which added an extra layer of tension and kept me engaged throughout the novel.

There was very little that I disliked about this book. If I were to mention a minor issue, it would be the pacing at the beginning of the story. The first few chapters focus heavily on world-building and setting the stage, which can feel a bit slow. However, once the plot begins to unfold, the pacing picks up significantly, and the story becomes much more engaging. Aside from this, I have no major complaints about the book.

I found no errors in this book, indicating that it was perfectly edited. The writing was smooth, and the language was clear, making it easy to get immersed in the story. I would give We are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies a rating of 5 out of 5 stars. This book is a must-read for fans of fantasy and sci-fi who enjoy a story with rich world-building, well-developed characters, and a plot filled with political intrigue and magical elements. It’s also well-suited for readers who appreciate stories where personal and larger societal conflicts are deeply intertwined.
