“We Are Voulhire: A New Arrival Under Great Skies” by Matthew Tysz introduces readers to a richly imagined fantasy world where magic and mystery intertwine. The story begins with Galen Bray, who, after enduring a harsh life in the war-torn Land of the Princes, learns that he has inherited a blacksmith’s forge in the prosperous kingdom of Voulhire from his late uncle. Upon arriving, Galen discovers a land full of mystery and danger as he attempts to settle into his new role and continue his uncle’s legacy. Alongside him is Rowan, the executor of his uncle’s estate, who helps him navigate this unfamiliar world. The narrative also shifts to the city of Hillport, where Lord Eldus is tasked with revitalizing the city after it fell under the rule of the tyrant Lord Meldorath.

What I particularly enjoyed about this book was its intricate world-building and character development. The author skillfully weaves together various plot threads, creating a vivid picture of Voulhire and its challenges. Galen’s journey is both engaging and relatable, especially as he adjusts to life in a new land. Rowan’s humour and patience with Galen added a delightful touch to the story. Additionally, the book’s exploration of themes like magic, politics, and morality added depth to the narrative.

However, I felt that the initial part of the book, which focuses on the Land of the Princes, ended rather abruptly. While this setup was necessary for the larger story, it left me wanting a bit more closure before moving on to Voulhire. Despite this minor issue, the story’s progression and the development of its various characters kept me hooked.

The book is exceptionally well-edited, with no noticeable grammatical errors. I rate this book 5 out of 5 stars because the writing is clear and engaging, and the plot is well-structured.

I recommend this book to fans of fantasy and adventure, especially those who appreciate detailed world-building and complex characters. However, due to some mature content, it’s best suited for older teenagers and adults.
