Review of Roan
[Following is a volunteer review of "Roan" by E. R. Barr.]
“Roan” by E.R. Barr is an exceptional sci-fi and fantasy novel that takes readers on a thrilling journey through mythology, mystery, and personal growth. The story follows Conor Archer, a teenager from Chicago, whose life is turned upside down after a strange encounter and the loss of his mother. This tragedy leads him to the small town of Tinker’s Grove in Wisconsin, where he uncovers secrets about his ancestry and a deep connection to ancient mythological forces. Conor must confront dark enemies and take on responsibilities he never imagined as he comes to terms with his newfound powers.
The town of Tinker’s Grove is the heart of the story, filled with Celtic myths, Native American legends, and a host of mysterious figures. Conor is guided by his Aunt Emily and supported by new friends Jace and Beth, as well as other magical beings who help him discover his purpose. The novel weaves modern science, ancient magic, and coming-of-age themes to create a rich, immersive world where every character and plot point plays a vital role.
What I loved most about this book is how the author blends mythology with modern elements, making the story unique and engaging. The impressive world-building has intricate details that bring Tinker’s Grove and its inhabitants to life. I found Conor’s character development particularly compelling—his transformation from an ordinary teenager to someone who embraces his extraordinary destiny is believable and well-paced. The mythological elements were also fascinating, and I appreciated how seamlessly the author incorporated Celtic and Native American traditions into the plot. Despite its depth, every mystery was answered, and the story never felt rushed.
There is very little to dislike about this book. While the pacing is slower in the beginning as the world and characters are introduced, it’s clear that this setup is necessary to build the rich layers of the story. The slower moments allow readers to fully immerse themselves in the world Barr has created, making the payoff later in the book more satisfying.
I rate this book 5 out of 5 stars. The book is flawlessly edited, with no errors that I could find. The writing is smooth, and the attention to detail is remarkable. E.R. Barr’s storytelling is masterful, and the way he balances action, character development, and world-building makes this a must-read. I highly recommend this book to sci-fi and fantasy fans, especially those who enjoy stories rooted in mythology. This book will particularly appeal to young adults and adults who appreciate well-crafted, mythological narratives set against the backdrop of modern life. It's a gripping and satisfying read from start to finish.
