Galen Bray, a refugee, arrives in Voulhire full of thankfulness. However, he finds that the nation of Voulhire is far more complex and deadly than he ever imagined, even as he joins his new homeland and is ready to serve it to the best of his abilities. He cannot be saved from the hardships the land faces, not even by his inherited property. 

The violence and misery in the Land of Princes drove the first character, Galen Brady, to seek a new home. In search of a fresh start, he sets sail for Magnum Caelum, in the Voulhirean kingdom. Wilhelm Arcolo is King of Voulhire. Although magic, science, and opportunity are well-known in this region, a darkness is seeking to devour the kingdom underneath it. Galen assumed his late uncle's wealth upon his arrival and embarked on a mission in this new realm. Lord Edus is, in some ways, a supporting character.

Nothing in the book bothered me. The writing was excellent. Lord Eldus, the third Lord of Hilport, who was chosen by King Wilhem, the king of Voulhire, was one of the characters I enjoyed. I appreciated his and his family's commitment to building Hilport into a thriving community. They shared a common objective. They were sincere individuals who were concerned about the town's welfare. Galen Bray from the Land of the Princes, where people battled to exist, were uneasy, and conflict was common, was another character I enjoyed. I enjoyed Voulhire's resolve to carry on his uncle's blacksmithing skills and his travels with Rowan, his uncle's financial executor, who ended up being a friend, while they looked for the ideal metal for him to work on. Nothing in the book seemed to be wrong. The editing was excellent. The plot moved along at a satisfactory clip, and the author's writing style was captivating. I give it five out of five stars. Fans of fantasy and thrillers should read this book, in my opinion.
