We are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies is a fantasy novel by Matthew Tysz that actually reveals—what Voulhire as a kingdom holds for all it is worth regarding magic, intricate political matters, and even more sophisticated character details. It narrates the story of Galen Bray, a young blacksmith who managed to run from the war-torn Lands of the Princes in an effort to begin life anew in Voulhire.

Standing with him are characters like Lord Eldus, who seeks to keep the peace in Hillport; and Meldorath, full of mystery, dark magic, and ambitions that extend beyond all proportion. The novel is full of the unexpected attack on Hillport by Riva Rohavi and the inscrutable powers of Meldorath. I therefore highly recommend reading this book to readers who love reading about epic fantasy series.

The two major reasons that kept me satisfied while reading this book are: how creative the author was in making this different environment for characters, and then the depth of its characters. The book was also not devoid of inspirational stories. For me, Galen's journey from a war-torn land to a place of hope and opportunity is really inspiring.

Most of the scenes, especially where Galen first comes to Magnum Caelum and with whom the villagers greet him, are surely touching because they detail the vital warmth and community spirit in Voulhire. Also, there was the suspense of Meldorath's true intention that kept readers on the edge of their seats. The book was exceptionally well edited and error-free.

What didn't work for me was when certain parts became over-descriptive; at times, they really killed the pace of the narration. For instance, such an elaboration on the landscapes, beautiful though they were, did seem a bit excessive to me and detracted from the free flow of the story. Also, some of the characters—for example, the people who make up the town of Magnum Caelum—need to be more fleshed out to add to the community Galen enters. Overall, though, I didn’t dislike anything about this book.

The imaginative environs the characters inhabit, appealing characters, and a sweet plot make it a must-read for fantasy lovers, and I gave it a rating of 5 out of 5 stars. It is still prone to overusing descriptive language in certain instances and underdeveloped secondary characters, but those were minor issues.
