Review of We are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies
We Are Voulhire: A New Arrival is a wonderful and imaginative fantasy written by Matthew Tysz that combines the qualities of a great setting, characterization, and story. Forcing the reader and the audience into the vast universe of Voulhire from the first few chapters, the atmosphere describes political plots, magical occurrences, and unseen evil powers moving in the background.
The plot is based around the main character, Galen, the young man who left his devastated country unable to continue life in his home country and has to start a new life in Voulhire. The protagonist’s journey begins with obtaining the hatch; his arrival in the town of Magnum Caelum allows him to reveal the unknown world and the place of a person in it. Tysz's use of multiple personalities enriches the plot by giving the reader a peek into the main characters' lives, including the greedy and authoritative ruler King Wilhelm and the evil Lord Meldorath. An excellent job has been done on switching from one character’s perspective to another so the subject does not look and feel kaleidoscopic; instead, it has a wonderful feel to it.
It will be impossible not to start by praising the authors for the fantastic implementation of worldbuilding in We Are Voulhire. Tysz builds a world of looming anarchy where magic is present but shunned and a world of apparent dichotomy between the haves and the have-nots, rulers and ruled in this case. Every place, ranging from the crowded city of Magnum Caelum to the dark keep belonging to Lord Meldorath, is depicted in such a manner that a reader feels that he/she is there.
Overall, *We Are Voulhire: This novel, ‘A New Arrival under Great Skies*’ is a good start, I think, to what will be a great high fantasy sequence. Tysz skillfully builds a premise for political/magical/fate, and readers get the feeling of being thrown glimpses of something much larger. That is why this novel has flawless characters, a well-developed world, and perfect editing as well, and that is why it has to receive 5 out of 5 stars. This work, however, has no this or that defect with which any book of such a genre and scale might be involved; it is apodictical evidence of the variety and the quality of the publishers’ output. I do not find anything negative in this story, which is as good as it can be in every single possible manner. High fantasy audiences are not going to feel indifferent to this book, and they will not be able to look away from the first chapter of the book.
