Review of We are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies
What would you do if you found yourself in a new land filled with magic and danger? Well, you can find out by just reading this book. We Are Voulhire: A New Arrival Under Great Skies by Matthew Tysz yanks us to a kingdom full of magic, rulers, and mysterious threats. The story wastes no time unveiling with blast—a powerful figure named Meldorath taking over a town using strong magic. His quick and terrifying rise shows just how dangerous this world can be. At the same time, we meet Galen Bray, our unique protagonist, a young man escaping a war in his homeland. He arrives in the peaceful town of Magnum Caelum to take over his late uncle’s forge, but even as he settles into this new life, things aren't mellowing down, as there are bigger problems growing in the kingdom. With a mysterious dark force like Meldorath looming, Galen’s world is about to change forever. With Galen being a newbie in the town, we get to experience Voulhire first-hand with him and find out the answer to my intro question!
As the story rolls and rumbles, we get to learn more about the kingdom of Voulhire. The king, Wilhelm, tries to keep peace, but there are many enemies and strange forces rising against him. Lord Eldus, another important character, is sent to watch over the troubled town of Hillport, where Meldorath’s dark magic caused chaos. Through Galen’s eyes, we explore this magical land that is like a two-sided coin. The plot brings together Galen’s personal journey with the bigger problems in the kingdom, creating a story full of mystery and excitement. It's a killer of a book, and if you haven’t read this, you must, to find out the climax of this mystical plot.
One of the best things about this book, which is obvious, is how detailed the world is. Matthew Tysz builds a magical kingdom that feels real and alive. The towns, the magic, and the history of Voulhire all come together to create a place that readers will want to learn more about. Galen is a very likable character because he is new to this world, just like us readers. His journey of discovery helps make the story feel exciting and fresh. It doesn't stop you from thinking about what could be coming next or what could be knocking on their doors, though!
I also found the characters and their development very appreciable. The characters are another enormous strength of the book. Galen is an easily relatable character as he tries to find his place in a new world. Meldorath, the villain, is scary but also interesting because of his great power. The side characters, like King Wilhelm and Lord Eldus, each have their own struggles, making the story feel more complex and detailed. This makes the book enjoyable to read because the characters are not the usual generic, simple, or one-sided constructs. I don’t have any drawbacks or anything to hate about the book—it's perfectly written and presented. I spotted just two errors while reading, indicating that the book is professionally edited.
This is a solid 5 out of 5-star book, and my points so far back it up. I would recommend We Are Voulhire: A New Arrival Under Great Skies to kids and adults who like fantasy stories full of magic, adventure, and mystery. Readers who find detailed worlds and solid characters irresistible won't know what hit them.
