Review of Sent to Watch
What if life on other planets were real? What will a world with multiple planets occupied by different kinds of people look like? Sent to Watch by David J. Lebenstein is a science fiction and historical novel that focuses on interplanetary exploration, the code of non-interference, and a detour into history. Set in the British Empire, it explores a fictional world with references to known histories.
The Interplanetary Intelligence Service was a body that investigated and decided if a new planet was ready to join the confederation of civilized planets by gathering information about it with the help of their agents. About 51 planets had already been discovered. Agents Unni Vlaytork and Ori Svavapass were agents with powers sent by the service to gather information on Earth 48, also called England, in a bid to include it in the confederation. They were given the code of not getting involved in the affairs of the planet while on their watch. However, they found out something that tested their allegiance to the code. Ori also fell in love with Unni, and although it was initially unrequited because of her interest in another agent, they had an affair that was against the rules of the service. With so many obstacles in the way, these agents must fight to protect the planet entrusted under their watch.
I really enjoyed reading this book. I found most of its concepts very new and intriguing. I particularly loved how the author was able to weave history into fiction, making it such an educational read. I learned so much about British history, including the Battle of Waterloo and the Napoleonic period, which greatly increased my knowledge bank. I also loved how human vices like greed were clearly shown in the book, showing their detrimental impact. I enjoyed the romantic aspect of the book, which made it all-encompassing. The book also contained a glossary that explains the characters and certain terms in the book for easy navigation. It was an amazing read.
I did not dislike anything about the book. It was carefully crafted and written in the simplest and most beautiful way possible. The ideas of interplanetary travel and investigation were strange and, at the same time, refreshingly beautiful.
I rate this book five out of five stars for its beautifully written and brilliant story. The book was exceptionally edited, and I found no errors while reading it. I wholeheartedly recommend it to lovers of sci-fi novels with beautiful suspense. I also recommend it to individuals interested in historical fiction. This is an amazing read that will keep you glued till the end.
