Catalina DuBois's book, Infinity: A Crown of Golden Leaves, is historical fiction that is set in ancient Rome. The story focuses on two lovers who are starcrossed due to an ancient curse. The story is about a slave girl who is in love with Prince Matthaios, who is the heir to an empire. However, their love is forbidden. They spend some private moments together, hoping for a better life to come. Nevertheless, their happiness is suddenly cut off when Daetor, who is Caesar's enforcer, cruelly punishes Sara. This hits hard on their happiness. So, while all of this is going on, Matthaios is struggling with deciding whether or not to be loyal to his despotic father, Caesar, or to hold on to his affections for Sara.

As the story progresses, Matthaios becomes more involved in Sara's life. On one occasion, he rescued her from an angry mob. He also tries to shield her from the anger of his own father. Alongside the lines of the two main characters, the narrative also introduces Perseus, a gladiator, as well as other characters, such as the wicked gladiator Remus, whose stories connect with Matthaios and Sara's paths. These individuals are introduced with their own personal narratives. In addition, the novel explores the terrible realities of slavery, gladiator fights, and forbidden love within the context of an exquisite yet horrific description of ancient Rome.

I like many things about this book. One of the most appealing aspects is the rich character development. The characters are highly complicated and ethically gray, making their actions and struggles feel real. Sara’s courage and Matthaios’s struggles with his sense of duty as well as his emotions are vividly explored. I also enjoyed the author's vivid storytelling. It kind of appeared educational because I understood a lot about ancient Rome, especially about their government. The setting of ancient Rome is wonderfully portrayed in the book, with the ancient world of the gladiators, the emperors, and the slaves. The Roman Coliseum, the sumptuous palaces, and the cruel gladiator fights were described in details. This offers a picture of the greatness and the intense horror as of that time.

The romantic tension between Sara and Matthaios, despite their differing socioeconomic statuses, offers emotional depth to the plot. Catalina DuBois expertly balances action, romance, and historical details, making the book an entertaining read. Also, the story is not a long one, so I easily finished it. There is no aspect of this book that I dislike. While reading this book, I noticed only two errors in it, which shows that it was professionally edited.

I rate this book 5 out of 5 stars for all the reasons I described above. I recommend this book to readers who appreciate historical fiction with strong characters and a mix of romance and adventure.
