Voulhire. The Land of Princes. Cosmos. Caromentis. What are these places? And what is the story that links them together? Find out more in the first of the “We are Voulhire” series: We are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies by Matthew Tysz.

The story starts as we see Voulhire through the eyes of Galen Bray, a refugee from the Land of Princes. He has fled to Voulhire to take on his inheritance from his great-uncle, the owner of an iron forge in Magnum Caelum. In Voulhire, King Wilhelm is on the throne. However, he faces the threat of the Lord High Chancellor, Midius Maido, who will determine the heir to the throne. In addition, the Mianoran Knights, a protective force in Voulhire, contend with a violent insurgence called the Riva Rohavi. A powerful mage, Dalehei Meldorath, former Lord of Hillport, is widely believed to be dead. In reality, he was seen as a threat to the king and imprisoned on Lorcia’s Isle, an island near Hillport.

Tysz has created a convincing fantasy world, using the perspective of different characters to create depth and dimension. Interestingly, only Galen Bray speaks in the first person. What is his significance in the story? Readers will need to read on to find out.

The initial chapters moved from place to place to explain vital characters and locations. This process did not feel disjointed as the author illustrates the significance of each place in detail before moving on to the next place.

As the first in a series of novels, this book is engaging and well-written. It is well-paced, and there are no sections that feel draggy. After finishing this book, I found myself excitedly anticipating its sequel. It felt like the first phase of a mission was complete, and I was ready to move on to the second phase.

Therefore, I rate this book five out of five. There is nothing that I would change about the book. The errors that I found did not hinder my enjoyment of the book. It is well suited to lovers of fantasy novels and magic.
