Review of We are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies
[Following is a volunteer review of "We are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies" by Matthew Tysz.]
We Are Voulhire: Privileged to be Under the Immense Sky is an interesting introduction to an incredibly imaginative and mysterious world with interesting protagonists. I believe that Matthew Tysz performs a great job when creating the society and setting in the kingdom of Voulhire, as well as the opportunities and threats connected with it, internal and exterior politics, and magic. Here the hero is Gale—a young man who had to leave his home as a result of the civil wars only to be in a country that has not adapted to a post-war world.
I want to stress that the degree of world-building in this novel is beyond any doubt outstanding. Tysz manages to describe rather complicated details about the geography, culture, and social standing of Voulhire without confusing the reader. The overall design is satisfactory, but it is worth noticing that every subject within the world seems to have been created with a fair amount of attention. Difficulty: There is not a moment when these aspects of power, greed, and destiny interfere with the narration or force the reader to turn the pages to continue reading the story, as everything flows smoothly from one part of the novel to another.
The other worthy mention I have about this book is the characters. Yet, Galen is surely one of the most lovable protagonists, and he has a rich background as well. Combined with a pursuit of personal identity with the comments on the peculiar and, at times, hostile nature of Voulhire, he is a likeable protagonist to support. Concerning characters, the main and secondary ones, such as Rowan and King Wilhelm, are equally developed as the main ones, which also contributed to the creation of the plot-twisting factor.
There’s also no notable dead time, and the fast pace of the story is balanced between having action scenes, revealing the main characters’ personalities through their dialogues, and exploring the world built around them. Tysz has chosen an interesting and somewhat unusual approach to his storytelling; the descriptions are clear and the characters are well-drawn; the same can be said about the setting.
Overall, I rate *We Are Voulhire: A New Arrival Under Great Skies* 5 out of 5 stars. The book was edited exceptionally well, as I didn’t find any typos or errors, and I disliked nothing about the story. This is a fantastic start to what promises to be a riveting series.
