We are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies by Matthew Tysz marks a compelling beginning to a fantasy saga that masterfully intertwines themes of personal evolution, intricate politics, and enchanting suspense. At the heart of the story is Galen Bray, a young escapee from a ravaged homeland, who seeks sanctuary and a new beginning within the realm of Voulhire. His adventure kicks off with inheriting a blacksmith’s forge in Magnum Caelum, a seemingly tranquil town. However, what appears to be a straightforward tale of relocation quickly evolves into a multifaceted narrative filled with political tensions, sinister magic, and battles for dominance.

The world of Voulhire immediately captivates with its vivid and meticulously crafted settings. Tysz excels in world-building, infusing each locale and character with depth and authenticity. Magnum Caelum stands out as a serene and charming settlement, providing a sharp contrast to the ominous Hillport. Hillport is shrouded in a menacing aura, largely due to the lingering shadow of Lord Meldorath, a formidable mage whose dark influence permeates the story. As the plot unfolds, readers become deeply invested not only in Galen’s personal experiences but also in the overarching dynamics that shape the kingdom—from its governance to the mystical forces at play.

A highlight of the novel is its exploration of Voulhire’s political landscape. Central to the kingdom’s administration are King Wilhelm and his cunning Chancellor, Midius Maido. Their interactions are fraught with tension, especially as Maido’s manipulative schemes add layers of complexity to the political arena. The emergence of the insurgent Riva Rohavi faction and the persistent threat of Lord Meldorath elevate the narrative stakes, illustrating a kingdom teetering on the edge of significant turmoil. These political elements are seamlessly integrated with the magical framework, enriching the story’s conflicts and adding depth to the overall plot.

Balancing the grand political and magical narratives is Galen’s more intimate personal journey. As a newcomer to Voulhire, Galen’s awe of his surroundings and his gradual adaptation to life as a blacksmith provide a heartfelt counterpoint to the larger story. His interactions with the townsfolk and his growing awareness that Voulhire holds more darkness beneath its idyllic surface keep the narrative grounded. While his storyline occasionally takes a backseat to the epic events, Galen’s emotional development remains a compelling aspect of the book, offering readers a relatable and engaging perspective.

As the story advances, the convergence of political and magical tensions reaches a climax, particularly within the subplot of Hillport. Eldus Alderman’s efforts to restore the town while contending with the remnants of Lord Meldorath’s dark experiments inject a sense of unease and anticipation. This subplot underscores the theme of power—both political and magical—and its potential to corrupt or damage those who wield it. The harmonious blend of magic and political intrigue is expertly handled, ensuring that neither overshadows the other and that the narrative remains dynamic and well-rounded.

The novel also stands out for its exceptional editing. The prose flows smoothly, and the pacing is consistently engaging, free from any disruptive errors or awkward moments. Each scene is thoughtfully constructed, balancing detailed descriptions that build the world and develop characters with a forward-moving plot. This meticulous attention to editing ensures an immersive reading experience, allowing the story to unfold seamlessly without technical distractions. I found no negative aspects to make me give a rating lower than 5 out of 5 stars.
