"We are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies" by Matthew Tysz was a refreshing new read and a great start to a seven-part fantasy series. After finishing this book, I am very interested in continuing on with the rest of the series. The plot is complex but still easy to follow as it paints an in-depth picture of the fictional kingdom of Voulhire. The author does a wonderful job of immersing the reader into the story, with the various plot aspects tying together and keeping the reader's interest throughout. I gave this book 5/5 rating because of how immersive the descriptive scenes are and how the author was able to keep my interest throughout the story.
The story of "Voulhire" follows our protagonist, Galen, a refugee from a society greatly impacted by war. Throughout this first installment of the series, we see Galen evolve as he is faced with the challenges of living in a new country and the adversaries he crosses paths with along the way. One of these is a mage named Meldorath, who is rumored to still be alive. He is so evil and feared that the people of Voulhire do not dare to speak his name. A parallel universe known as Caromentis is vaguely mentioned, seemingly foreshadowing a new setting that will hopefully be explored in the books following in the series.
There is some major profanity in the story, as well as some mild sexual content-related humor. Due to the nature of this content, I would not recommend this book to a younger audience or children. It would best be suited for young adults and up. Those who are big fans of fantasy and magic genres would really enjoy "Voulhire". I did not find any errors in grammar or spelling, indicating exceptional editing quality. Themes of this story include good vs. evil, mystery, magic, and politics. I really enjoyed this book, and the only drawback I would have to say is that it is occasionally complex and can be hard to follow, but this is typical of books from the fantasy genre. I appreciate the detail Tysz has put into building his world and really making it feel immersive. The book starts out slow, but soon leads into a captivating tale, which left me excited to read the next installment.
