Review of Terms of Service
She/her/hers are the pronouns used in this novel, even for male characters, hence in my review, I would also be using these pronouns.
Our protagonist Kim lives a boring life as a law-abiding citizen in a society controlled by Artificial Intelligences (AIs). The food eaten, temperature of water bathed, clothes worn and dating partners are all decided by the AIs. Kim works at the AI Company’s regional headquarters where she trains automatons; simple devices that are unable to think for themselves. In this society where citizens are under surveillance all the time, Kim stays obedient to avoid attracting any form of trouble. This was until her day out cycling with her best friend, Shan, during which Kim discovered shocking truths that made her understand that there is more to their world than meets the eye. Kim later finds out more about the AIs and their indirect control over their lives from their time of birth. How would Kim make use of this information? Read this wonderful novel to find out.
In Terms of Service: Subject to Change Without Notice, Craig W. Stanfill takes us into the future, many years from now, when technology has grown to a tremendous level and now affects every aspect of humanity; and where the privacy we are gradually losing now is by then completely gone. This novel also explains how technology can negatively affect mankind if not controlled properly. Craig W. Stanfill in this novel shows how face-to-face interaction among individuals, and concern for fellow mankind are gradually lost due to fear of being sanctioned for invading another's privacy; privacy that barely exists in the first place. This novel covers various themes including parenting, love, artificial intelligence, homosexuality, and friendship among others.
I liked every aspect of this book, from the gradual introduction of Kim, Kim's lifestyle and society in the first four chapters of the novel, to Kim's discovery of certain hidden truths that raised questions and doubts in her heart. I liked how Kim made illogical decisions whenever she was with Shan. However, my favorite part of the book was the page that talks about the sequel to this novel. It was both exciting and relieving to know that the story continues.
As for the negative aspects of this book, I found none. The language used was easy to understand, and certain AI terms were even explained. The novel is like a peep into the future should we continue on our current path as a society.
I was satisfied with this novel and found no faults with it. The book was exceptionally well edited; hence, I rate it 5 out of 5 stars.
I recommend this novel to lovers of AI. Also, due to the instances of drug use, erotic encounters, and the presence of profanity, I recommend this novel to mature readers or adults.
