Review of Queens of Moirai
Queens of Moirai by Rhiannon Hargadon combines gothic horror, romance, and mythology to create a compelling tale. Morena, a descendant of the Fates, was imprisoned in a tower alongside her brother and sister by her mother, Queen Malinda. After her brother is murdered during a failed escape attempt, Morena resigns herself to being trapped. She begins to do her mother's bidding, adding to her undead army, to protect her sister. What will happen when Morena is presented with the chance to escape and embrace her birthright?
As a huge fan of Halloween, horror, and all things spooky, I hit the jackpot with this novel. The undead, referred to as Cullen, are created if the dead's body is not destroyed. Morena, growing up in the tower, is haunted by the clicking of the Cullen. I thought this was such an eerie detail that continued throughout the novel. It adds an easy-to-imagine motif that is reminiscent of sound effects used in horror movies, such as thunder clapping in the distance or a creaking door before the villain pops out.
The character development is also excellent. Morena started the novel as a terrified child who had no powers or ability to defend herself or her siblings. As the novel progressed, she began to learn more about who she was and her powers. She also struggled with the moral dilemma of being the Grim Reaper. The world is plagued because of immortality, but that does not mean Morena enjoys killing. She struggles with her destiny despite being one of the Fates. These themes and more are explored through her character development.
I rate this book 5 out of 5 stars. Given there was nothing that I disliked about it, I have no reason to take off any stars. It appears to have been professionally edited, as there were only a few minor errors. There is some violence and sexual content in this book, so it is better suited for mature audiences. If you enjoy dark fantasy novels that give off Halloween vibes, then give Queens of Moirai a try!

Today is Halloween Day! I like the eeriness of the Cullen that you described. Morena's story and character are spellbinding. I could get lost and a little afraid??? in this book. Congratulations to the author, Rhiannon Hargadon, for earning a 5-star review from you.Laney K wrote: ↑26 Oct 2024, 14:53 [Following is an official OnlineBookClub.org review of "Queens of Moirai" by Rhiannon Hargadon.]

I really enjoyed this review; the book seems very interesting and is right up my alley. I love dark supernatural fantasy books. It's interesting that the book includes the clicking sound as a type of sound effect; I'm not sure exactly how it is incorporated into the story, so I guess I'll have to read the book to find out. The character description of Morena and the general vibe remind me of Land of the Beautiful Dead by R. Lee Smith, which is one of my favorite books.Laney K wrote: ↑26 Oct 2024, 14:53 [Following is an official OnlineBookClub.org review of "Queens of Moirai" by Rhiannon Hargadon.]
