Fish Wielder by J. R. R. R. (Jim) Hardison follows the adventures of Thoral, a man who sort of resembles He-man, and his fish companion Brad throughout the land of Grome (map included). The title of the book can only be understood by reading it, because it's sort of an inside joke. Fish Wielder is full of humor, sappy love scenes, and of course many battles. Some of the monsters present in these adventures will be recognized by those familiar with basic mythologies, and others appear to be original to the author. Not much was left to interpretation as far as the world building goes, given the different races, languages, foods, and customs that were introduced, and not to mention that the author also included hints toward currencies being used, and even presents a religious background of Grome. This attention to detail made it easy to imagine what life in this fictional world would be like. There was hardly a dull moment in reading this tale and the characters, the main ones in particular, were rather likable. At times it felt predictable, but in other instances I was caught off guard by the turn of events, in a good way. Thoral, although seemingly superhuman, does have a soft side and he is not without his bad habits, considering that alcohol is his choice of medicine in times when he is depressed.

One of the things I enjoyed about Fish Wielder was that it kept me guessing and oftentimes confused, which only made me more curious about what was going to happen next. Real world literary references can found throughout, which further prompts curiosity. Watching the companionship of the two main characters develop throughout the book was entertaining as well, given that they often disagreed on the course of action that should be taken on countless occasions, yet their bond to one another keeps them from being miserable in one another's presence.

I did feel the first couple battle scenes were a bit rushed, and I found myself re-reading them to make sure I understood what was happening, because it felt as thought it progressed too quickly and left me wondering how it got to where it did. I could have done without some of the extraordinarily cheesy love scenes, although their inclusion does lead me to feel the story would adapt well enough into something resembling a cartoon.

Overall I rate this book 4 out of 4 stars, primarily because I would re-read it for the sake of revisiting the fictional world and it's characters that I grew an attachment to in reading it the first time. A lot of the humor seen throughout, as cheesy at it may have been at times, also made it to be a light read. The plot progressed well enough, was interspersed with plenty of humor, the world building was detailed, and the characters were easy to like.

If the sappy love scenes were doubled it would have brought my rating down to a 3, because I feel it would have been too much of a distraction from the actual plot, but since that was not the case it receives 4 out of 4 stars.
