[Following is an official OnlineBookClub.org review of "Restoration of the Golden Orbs" by Paul A Mendel.]
Restoration of the Golden Orbs by Paul A. Mendel is the second book in the Mind Power series and immediately dives into action as fourteen-year-old Dylan gets whisked away back to Sartan, an alien planet that has been taken over by the Satyryx race. The story progresses as Dylan learns more about the struggles that the Myrds, Volks, and other species face under the Satyryx rule and as he finds the power within himself to bring an end to the Satyryx tyranny.
This book was a very lovely book to read! The author does a great job in describing just how badly the Satyryx rule had affected all of the species on Sartan, and it was easy to see how each character, especially Dylan’s mentor Orf, cared for one another and expressed this affection in many ways. I particularly enjoyed the fact that all-knowing characters such as Orf were also portrayed to make mistakes, such as mixing up another Volk’s names. This not only adds humor but also adds another depth to each character! In this same line, it was refreshing to see the inner thoughts of the villains of the story, as this provided the reader a chance to understand their point of view while also hearing their inner doubts and thoughts.
What I did not particularly like about this book was the overall formality in the author’s writing. Each dialogue was written in a way that was incredibly difficult to believe that any fourteen-year-old would speak in this manner. While the author does a good job in setting the scene, the overuse of adjectives often takes away rather than adds to the enjoyment of reading the story. I also felt at times that the author described actions in too much detail, often depicting every single action or thought that a character would have in places where a much more summarized paragraph would have sufficed.
Overall, I would rate this book a 3 out of 5 with points taken away for the formality of writing and lack of professional editing. There were some instances of profanity and no sexual content. I would recommend this book to readers who are looking for a science fiction story that will teach them how to take control of their own thoughts and fears!
