No Truce With The Vampires by Martyn Rhys Vaughan is a work of speculative fiction, specifically science fantasy. The Vampires have come out of the shadows and established their dominance over the human race. They have secured their blood supply by cloning human blood cells. However, there are human farms as well for those who do not want to consume such mass-produced blood, and often humans from the lower strata of society find themselves in these establishments.

Charles Gray, a human, works in the police department, one of the few dignified jobs left for humans. He is tasked by his Vampire superior to look into a strange occurrence at the Diodati Institute. However, another problem presents itself when various human farms are attacked by an alleged human terrorist organization. At the same time, there are rumours circulating that the Old Gods, foes of the Vampires, have returned. Will Gray follow his duty as a police officer and team up with the Vampires, or will he sympathize with the human cause?

I started this book with minimal expectations but was pleasantly surprised by the plot, characters, as well as the writing style. The plot is intriguing and builds up excellently with each successive chapter. The supernatural and mythical elements sit well with the overall storyline. The author has a way of writing that is both comical and anticipatory. The protagonist, Charles Gray, has an amazing character arc. Gray's reaction to the surprising events that unfold in the story can be resonated by the readers. His banter with his subordinate officer, Serafina, as well as an air of mystery associated with some of the characters is perfectly executed by the author.

The theme that humans themselves were the reason for their subordination by the Vampires was an interesting satirical point. The fact that humans were manufacturing items that ensured the end of humanity, like the nuclear arsenal, had invited some superior race to intervene, was an interesting ironic theme that the author chose to present. However, as a reader, I found myself torn between supporting the Vampires or the Originals, as the humans were called. This is a testament to a great writing style.

Moreover, the book is exceptionally edited, and the choice of words is applaudable. I enjoyed myself thoroughly while reading this book and have no complaints whatsoever. It is the perfect first book for a fantasy series. For all the above-mentioned reasons, I rate this book five out of five.
