Review of Mystics of Fortune

This book, Mystics of Fortune by Mike Carlozzi, is a thrilling post-apocalyptic science fiction read with so much content to carry an entire series. The book starts with a prologue introducing us to Dr. Sabrina Maria Reeves. She published the faster-than-light travel theory [FTL] and later founded the Reeves Corporation. In 2049, an asteroid storm hit Earth, absorbing its light and leaving it in ruins. Humanity had no backup plans, as they had not expected this unfortunate event. This event left diseases, viruses, and the deaths of plants and animals in its wake. In 2054, the Kupita virus spread, leading to the discovery of Rakeem Simphiwe, who developed a sixth sense from surviving the virus. He found that he could heal people and put that ability to good use. These people who developed a sixth sense from surviving the virus were known as the mystics and were seen as humanity’s hope. As we read further, we are introduced to the present day and our protagonist, Jayden Vaut, who, after the death of his parents, was exiled to Ojult because of a rule under the PGU’s [Planetary Governing Union] debt service. In Carendra, he worked as Syrus’s assassin, but an unfortunate setup against him led to his exile from Carendra. How does he survive on Ojult amidst all this power struggle? I loved that the book was well thought out. The author took the time to lay the background for the story in the prologue. In the prologue, we get a good look into history as the start of everything, from what causes some people to become mystics to the people of power and the toggle of power between them and the many events in the book. Jayden was a well-written character. From his time as Syrus’s assassin to the later events in the book, there was apparent character growth. He has so many moments that make the readers sympathize with him, like when there was a failed attempt on his life by Kavil, and in the end, he was exiled when he was innocent. I also enjoyed the sarcastic moment in the book, like the exchange between Ruven and Tayla Cruz the first time they met. I loved that there was some inclusion of African characters in the book. It showed how vast and inclusive the book is and how much attention the author put into its details. In general, the book was enjoyable to read.
On the downside, some parts of the book were not so enjoyable. The book used simple language, but the names took a lot of work to keep up with. There were characters named Phaedra, Elasus, Commodus, Achilla, etc. The character names were complex, and there were so many of them, which made reading the book difficult. The book was also a lengthy read. The topic was gripping, but the book was overloaded with details. It should have been split into a series to solve the length problem and the detail overload problem. Aside from that, I enjoyed reading the book, and I loved that the ideas are original.
Considering all aspects of the review, I rate the book four out of five stars. The star deduction is because of the negative aspect listed. The book is a fine read and would appeal to lovers of post-apocalyptic fiction. This book has themes of human trafficking, wars, and killings, so if this is a sensitive topic for you, then cautiously read this book or skip it.
