Fish Wielder is an imaginative, ironic, satirical story of a hero named Thoral Mighty Fist. Along with his unusual friend and companion, Bradfast the koi fish, Thoral must rid the land of Grome of the evil beings and items plaguing it with his trusty sword and an arsenal of other odd magical items. Although Thoral is human he is Thoral Mighty Fist and will not let anyone forget it. There is nothing that can come between him and following through with the promises that he makes or the completion of the heroic tasks that he takes on in the process of fulfilling those promises.
I give Fish Wielder the score of a 4 out of 4 stars. Although the story may seem somewhat obscure at times it is obvious that it has been intentionally written this way. The irony of the story telling has moments of seriousness but does not cease to coax a smile from the reader, if not roaring laughter. There are some moments that seem as if they do not belong but later make a lot more sense.
The stereotypical characters are well written, even though they do have strange names, and manage to fill their given roles in the story seamlessly. There is never a dull moment as Throal fights when encounters an evildoer, or even just struggles to find the right word to say. The stereotypical nature of each character is laughable and only adds to the humorous nature of Fish Wielder.
If you are the type of person that likes sarcasm, irony, and satire then this book is definitely for you. The stereotypical and satirical nature of this book can be off-putting if you are not accustomed to that sort of humor. I would not suggest this book if you do not enjoy making fun of the hero and his journey, much like the Monty Python comedy group has done.
Even though this book is written to be ironic it does a masterful job of keeping the reader engaged and entertained. With each battle there is always something new to learn about Thoral and why he is on his journey. We also learn a few interesting facts about Bradfast, Thoral’s journey companion and friend. There are even a few surprises in store for our hero as he and his companion journey to help the land of Grome. If you are ready for a comical adventure in another world this is a journey I would suggest you take.
