Review of Lann Dàn – Blades of Destiny
Lann Dàn Blades of Destiny By James Raquepau is historical fiction. This book is good for anyone who enjoys high adventure, fantasy, and historical fiction.
The story takes place in 5th century Ireland. The people of the land have been tormented for years by Norse invaders. The Mother Goddess Dana and the other Tuatha gods send Celtic warrior Breanna Ban Morna on a quest to find the Tuatha-created weapons, Lann Dàn. These weapons are one of three magical items needed to remove the Norse dreadlord leader and his people from the Gales land of Erin.
Breanna Ban Morna is a fierce and fast warrior. Growing up under the thumb of the invading Dreadlord. Breanna's goal is to protect her people from the outlanders and one day kill their leader. Her abilities set her apart from the other warriors in her dun, as does her appearance. Her own personal tragedy sets her on a path to meet the Mother Goddess Dana, where she is given the quest to find the lost blades, Lann Dàn.
I really like the characters in this story. They were very relatable with strong character arcs. I especially loved witnessing Breanna's internal turmoil as the story progressed. Eventually questioning her own coldness and motives. As well as Eoin's love and loyalty for Breanna.
I enjoyed the pace and tone of the book. I was able to keep up well enough with the quick-paced fighting scenes. All the while the traveling didn't seem boring or monotonous either.
There were strong themes of fate, revenge, family, and belonging.
The story's strengths lie in the well-rounded characters, intriguing story, good pacing, and well-researched history, mythology, and geography.
The biggest weakness is the addition of Gaelic and Norse words. Although adding them did create beautiful authenticity, it detracted from the story because the use of them was at times confusing. I did not know until the end that there was a glossary. It would have been more helpful placed at the beginning, before the story, to have a reference that was known about.
I absolutely loved this novel. I rate it 5 out of 5. I am so excited for the next novel. I was so enthralled with the story that I was sad when I realized it had ended. I didn't notice many, if any, errors. The novel seems to be edited professionally. I highly recommend this to anyone who likes historical fiction or fantasy.
