Fish Wielder by Jim Hardison is a comical portrayal of a fantasy novel. The author does a great job of creating an interesting story while at the same time making fun of the more typical features of several different types of books and movies. The main character, Thoral Mighty Fist lives for adventure and ale. He and his friend, Brad, have made it their quest to find and destroy the clerics of The Dark Religion that are wreaking havoc on their world. As they travel around attempting to complete their quest, they forge new friendships and are forced to defend themselves against evil villains and hideous monsters.

At first, Thoral appears to be the type of hero one would expect to find in a fantasy novel. He is both a little mysterious and very handsome with plenty of experience fighting and adventuring. As the story progresses, however, the reader begins to realize that many of Thoral’s accomplishments are due to sheer luck. He seems to accomplish more by accident than he ever does on purpose, and is miraculously always in the right place at the right time. The descriptions of Thoral’s antics and the obvious references to other books and movies had me laughing throughout the entire story.

The author does an excellent job with the plot of his story as well. I did enjoy the humorous aspects of the book, but I was also interested to see what would happen next. As the story progresses, the reader learns more about the various characters and what makes them tick. The plot also had plenty of twists to keep the reader interested. The ending was satisfying but did leave enough unanswered questions that the author could write more books about these characters if he chose to.

I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a good fantasy or action novel and who needs a good laugh. The book does have a lot of gory details and the humor does get a little gross sometimes. It wasn’t an issue for me personally, but maybe a problem for some readers.

The author has created a fantasy story with all the action you would expect from this type of book and added a comical aspect to make the story even better. I enjoyed this book and look forward to reading more from this author. I rate the book 4 out of 4 stars.
