Fish Weilder by J.R.R.R. (Jim) Haridson is a book about a mighty hero called Thoral Mighty Fist in the strange land of Grome; and his best friend, Bradfast, the Koi Carp. The book revolves around them making their way in the world and taking on quests. Eventually they take on a quest given to them by the Elf King to find and destroy the ‘Pudding of Power’ before the evil Heartless one can give it to their master and destroy all of Grome.
This book is written in such a way that it draws the reader in and immediately has them interested in the characters. Written in a way that is not meant to be taken seriously, “Fish Weilder” is a fantasy book that draws on parts from other fantasy stories and turns it into something entirely unique. It’s a mixture of spoofs and original story and this makes the book a lot funnier and more intriguing to the reader.
I really liked all the subtle references that are cleverly disguised throughout the book. From items; to plot lines; to people’s names; they are used in clever ways and in the exact right places in the story to give the reader an extra laugh amongst the many, already humorous, points. I loved the story and how it unfolds. It isn’t too heavy a story as to require too much concentration to understand, but it is complex enough to allow the reader to get lost in the story and get completely drawn into the world that the book is set in.
There wasn’t anything particularly that I didn’t like about the story itself. The whole thing was very interesting and very funny. The way it was written was, at times, perhaps a little tedious to read. Not a lot but sometimes it seemed to over explain things or repeat certain phrases. Occasionally this was needed and fitted in well with the story but at other times it didn’t seem to fit. This didn’t, however, take anything away from the story itself and I still found that I really enjoyed the whole book.
I rate this book 4 out of 4. Overall it was well written in a style that fitted with the story itself and kept the reader interested without forcing them to overthink about things. The characters are well rounded and relatable. The world itself is interesting and sounds like somewhere I would like to visit. The only thing I would like to add is that I really hope that the author writes a sequel, as the story could really be continued and I would look forward to reading it.
