Deeds determine what or who is a monster. This is the quote that resonated with me the most from this book. It describes the persona of Adam Frankenstein quite well and it criticizes people's tendency to glorify the beautiful and condemn the least visually appealing. Adam Frankenstein and the creatures I encountered in this book are somewhat more humane than the people who would otherwise call them monsters.
The novel begins with Mary Shelley lying on the ground in a puddle of mud made of sand and blood. The League of Supernatural Hunters had been invaded by vampires. Mary Shelley is in critical condition and there is nothing Adam can do. A league member pulls over with a vehicle and Adam helps Mary lie across the seat beside him. Adam completely adores Mary Shelley and he even regrets that her death may be nature's way of punishing his existence since he has no soul. They are gentle with each other. There is love between them no doubt, somewhat of an unrequited love but now more of an impossible love as she takes her last gasps of breath.
Years later, Adam is about 200 years old and in pursuit of Dr.Laura Wells at the league's bidding. Dr.Laura Wells is a brilliant scientist and a master witch thus a huge asset and a formidable adversary to the league. Dr.Wells is involved with the Estrellas who are involved with the Miltons and Warren Milton is in a cabin with Marshal Rebecca Hughes trying to escape Estrella hit men.
Fates are intertwined. The world of the supernatural and the drug cartel have conspired against mankind and the law is on their trail. A sheet of paper is what perpetuates all this chaos.
What I like about this novel is that it's somewhat of an homage to the 1818 Frankenstein; The Modern Prometheus by Mary Shelley as Mary Shelley appears as a character in the author's adaptation. However, only subtle references were made as the one stated above. I disliked nothing about this book and found the characters to be well written.
I rate this book 5 out of 5 stars because of its flawless editing and the new and exciting dynamic of the famous character Frankenstein. It suffices as a day's read for the casual reader and is incredibly well paced. I highly recommend it to readers interested in fantasy set in modern times.
