I would recommend Fish Wielder by J.R.R.R. (Jim) Hardison to anyone who loves fun stories, Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, or Dungeons and Dragons. The story is full of fun and perilous moments with a few surprises thrown into the mix. Although if you prefer your swords and sorcery books serious, with less satire and jokes, I would recommend skipping this one.
Fish Wielder is an amusing, at times satirical, swords and sorcery novel. It’s as if all the best fantasy stories came together in one single tome written by a comedian. You can’t help but laugh out loud at the adventures of Thoral Mighty Fist and his faithful companion, Bradfast the Koi. Set upon a dangerous mission, Thoral must fight his way through many perils to save the day and the entire land of Grome from the Bad Religion. Along the way are plenty of moments to laugh, gasp, and sigh in relief, leaving the reader feeling both happy and satisfied.
I must admit I spent a lot of time literally laughing aloud reading this book. It has just the right mix of serious, satire, and outright comedy with a few surprises thrown in. Just when I thought I knew where the story was going, Hardison through in a curve ball. The book is very well written with a great pace. I honestly never wanted to put this book down because you keep getting hooked repeatedly. I was originally nervous because of the length of the book, but Hardison carried the story well throughout.
The length is really my biggest complaint. I almost didn’t read this book because of the page count. I love to read but even this was a bit daunting for me. I don’t think there is any way it could really be broken down into smaller books without ruining the story, and I wouldn’t want any parts cut out, but the length was very daunting. To summarize: it was way too long page wise, but the perfect length story wise.
I give Fish Wielder by J.R.R.R. (Jim) Hardison 4 out of 4 stars, because it more than delivered on the promises in the synopsis. I laughed, I held my breath, my heart pounded, and I fell in love with Thoral and Bradfast. Although it was a very long book, I have to admit I was sad when it ended. I didn’t want to leave them behind and return to the real world. Excellently written, I can’t recommend this book enough.
