Review of Emotionless
The book Emotionless is a young adult fantasy genre by Shaina Anastasi. It is a mix of romance, science fiction, and fantasy. The story follows Eileen Frost. Eileen is a highborn mage whose destiny was to rule, but her life took an unexpected turn after she interrupted A Mage’s War. It provides an immersive experience in a world where mages' lives are controlled by magic.
Eileen Frost is an ambitious, intelligent, and self-sufficient character. Her inability to show emotions due to a curse at age ten adds an interesting dynamic to her character development.
The romantic angle between Eileen and Lawliet is handled exceptionally well. Emotionless takes its time to develop the bond between the two characters. The relationship starts as a friendship and gradually progresses into something more.
The distinction between highborn and lowborn mages and their respective power levels creates tension and conflict. The concept of A Mage’s War, where mages fight for a wish, is an intriguing and well-executed idea. The inclusion of Guardians—beings who protect mages—adds another fascinating element, particularly with Eileen’s unique connection to hers.
Characters like Silas, Donte, and Nixon add depth to the story. Eileen’s elder brother Silas is one of my favorites due to his protective nature. The final scenes of Eileen and Lawliet’s perspectives are impactful and leave me eager to read the next installment.
Some sections of the story felt overly detailed about surrounding objects, making them drag on slightly. This issue doesn’t take away from the overall enjoyment of the book. The editing and writing style of the book is good enough.
Shaina Anastasi has a clear passion for dark fantasy. Shaina's love for engaging storytelling shines through in Emotionless. The author's ability to create deep, multifaceted characters and compelling political intrigue is commendable.
I will recommend the book to any age group, but I particularly recommend it to young adults. The book is really engaging for young adults due to its intricate magic systems and slow-burn romance. For me, the book has a well-deserved 5 out of 5 stars rating. The minor issue of being overly detailed about surrounding objects does not affect the rating of the book on my side due to its engaging nature.
