The book Fish Wielder is a classic heroic epic with danger and adventure at every corner, while I say classic it clearly stands out from the rest by infusing unusual, one might even say ridiculous, things into every aspect of the story. This distinguishing feature of this book, I could not help but to find it to be both amusing and entertaining as I read it.
The story starts off with our ruggedly handsome protagonist, Thoral Mighty Fist, drinking away his sorrows in a bar with his loyal talking Koi fish sidekick, Bradfast. The two soon leave on the back of our heroes trusty tiger stead Warlordhorse with some goading from Brad, that Thoral could very well end it all through adventuring. Thoral eager for the sweet release of death immediately heads out and ends up in a swamp. It is here where he fights and dispatches an evil sorcerer, Necrogrond, in his abandoned castle. It is then revealed that the evil sorcerer had been holding an elvish princess, Nalweegie, prisoner. The Princess upon being released immediately takes a liking to our buff hero. Moving ahead in the story during the celebratory feast for saving the princess Thoral hears from the King, Elfrod, that evil has been plaguing the elves, upon discovering this Thoral swears to destroy it and within moments rides off with heroic purpose. Later our hero comes face to face with Necrogrond's evil master the Head of the Bad religion which Thoral had previously sworn to slaughter them to a man, these and more twists of fate await Thoral on this must-read adventure.
My favorite part of the book is how Thoral is shown as the very image of heroism. I like that Thoral doesn't just accept that death happens, this is seen throughout the book as he suffers guilt from the deaths that have occurred because of him. Secondly, I like how Thoral doesn't take love as a simple thing and is actually troubled by his feeling which rarely happens in fiction and helps to flesh out his character. He becomes even more endearing thanks to his hilarious quirks, such as how he constantly seems to forget words and also the unusual way he speaks. He is actually his own person unlike other protagonists in other books I previously read who are simply designed to allow easy superimposition of the reader in their place.
If I had to say something I liked least about the book is that although it generally was a very interesting read, it did seem to become superfluous during certain sections. This feeling stemmed from the fact that some of the obstacles that arose in Thoral's path appeared to be only fillers, put there to lengthen the story. These low points of the story at the time were not much fun to read but when taking the book as a whole actually built up to something so I implore any future readers to push through them for the eventual payoff.
I rate this book 4 out of 4 stars. I found that the book's grammar was on point and there were no typos. I also consider it worthy of four stars as the book, in its entirety, was a pleasure to read and I look forward to reading a sequel if one becomes available. To further emphasize that the book was well written, hitting all the right notes, was that there was mystery, tragedy, sacrifice, an expansive world, multiple factions with their own agendas, shocking plot twists, everything that an epic adventure needs. I recommend this book to anyone young at heart who is into Fantasy/Adventure stories in which the story doesn't take itself too seriously. Inversely I don't recommend this book to people looking for a serious grizzled adventure where death waits around every corner as they will find the ridiculous antics within this book a bother rather than entertaining.
