Heaven and Earth is a unique reading experience. A tale of mind boggling realities that will leave the average reader stunned and conspiracy theorists nodding approvingly.
Riojas spins a heartfelt ideal of the meeting of minds while spelling out honestly and concisely the current state of many cultural and societial turmoils that affect not only our daily lives but the absolute future of humanity. His expertise and concern shine through in both his storytelling and his compiling of useful knowledge to combat one of the most serious mass health risks brought to light in our generation.
This book not only provides an inventive story, complete with enjoyable characters, thought provoking themes, and even a little action, but it also spells out clearly a present danger to our lives, health, and wellbeing, providing the information needed to reverse the harm. Riojas' writing is a clear call to action by an informed, educated, and concerned member of our own scientific community. He has done humanity a great service in stepping from his own comfort zone to address the issue head on regardless of further ridicule for his strong empathies.
Riojas' story writing style, however falls a bit short of his technical expertise, and comes across fequently as very over worded as the subject matter is indeed highy technical. This book may not become a mainstream sensation, but the communties revolving around farm-to-table practices, holistic living, and other 'new age' types of lifestyle will no doubt adopt this book with pleasure. I DO hope it achieves a mainstream influence since the book's purpose is to reach that portion of the population, but it does dive deep, and many are not ready for those waters.
The sci-fi story aspect of the book was enjoyable but left few stamped images in the mind. I found myself missing a more descriptive view of landscape or scenery, and often felt as if the action were taking place in a bubble. The characters, while likeable, lacked fleshing out, and often acted in odd ways with no frame of reference for their actions.
I give this book a rating of 4 out of 4 stars, because to even suggest 3.5, due to the unpolished writing style of a scientist, would be insult to the content, and this book needs to reach as many people as possible to end the suffering and untimely deaths being caused by current unethical agricultural, marketing, and business pratices in both this country and around the world. Books like these save lives and enlighten minds.
