Review of Beauty Queen Angel
Have you ever felt or dreamt about something that was about to happen, and it happened exactly that way? Beauty Queen Angel is a memoir by Betty Compton. Betty lived in Mississippi with her parents and siblings. Her father was a farmer who had alcoholism. They always feared the father coming home drunk and having one of his rages. One day, her father came home and was more than a little drunk. He started ranting and raving and went to get an axe. He chopped down their Christmas tree and all the presents under it. Not only that, but he went around the house smashing windows and furniture, everything. He then grabbed the mother and started beating her. He took a lit cigarette and burned her with it. He left the room for a minute, and Betty had a premonition that they had better get out of the house now or things would worsen. They ran out the back door and kept running until they got to Mr. Kenan’s house. He drove them to their grandma’s house, where they stayed for a while. Betty’s mom got a divorce, and they never went back home.
Betty started having visions and premonitions of things that were going to happen not only to her, but also to other people. She married Harvey Compton in 1967. He was a very kind and gentle man who always did things that showed how much he loved her. His family loved her like a daughter, sending Harvey and Betty to college. She got her real estate license, and Harvey learned how to build houses. They started a business of building homes and renting houses and apartments out. The company was thriving, and suddenly, Harvey began acting strangely and not himself at all. He had to be hospitalized, and he was never the same man that she married.
The author writes about Harvey and her illness, hallucinations, premonitions, near-death experiences, angels, and, of course, God. It is a very fascinating story that is heartbreaking and terrifying to read. Betty Compton went through a lot of drama and trauma in her life. Is this why she could envision what would happen next? Did seeing her father almost kill her mother affect her so much that she started seeing things?
Betty did not know why these things were happening to her. She never tried to make them happen; they just did. She wrote about her life honestly and courageously. Betty felt that telling her story might help someone else with these premonitions. The only thing I disliked about the book was that she didn’t fight back when abused. She just let it happen. I rate this book 4 out of 5 stars. I took one star away because I felt that she sometimes allowed herself to be a victim. This book is suitable for adults only. There is no profanity or sexual scenes, but there is a lot of violence. For those who are curious if angels are protecting us or guiding us, this book is for you.
