Sentinel of the Light by Dennis W. Rhoades is a story of science fiction with a twist on the classic coming-of-age story, but in a magical sense. This book had me glued from the beginning and kept my attention throughout. It starts with a sick David in the hospital on death’s door from a bout of pneumonia. After returning to his college campus from the hospital, he goes through an awakening of magical powers, and we get the chance to follow him on his journey.

This book had many ups and downs throughout David’s journey, and I really felt a connection to the people he met along the way. Dennis does a wonderful job explaining every character beforehand and their relevance to the storyline. The gifts of each additional character feel powerful and useful, but not over the top. I also enjoyed the buildup of suspense with some of the main characters and the feeling that it is unclear who is truly the enemy, but the urge to keep reading to find out.

My only issue with the book is that throughout the story, David gets many gifts, and while I did love that about the story, sometimes it felt that he might have gotten too much, and his power might be too strong compared to others. Though, I imagine that Dennis wanted to show that David is special and, therefore, gave him more than other common characters throughout the book. Even despite this, it truly did feel like David was an integral part of the magical story arc and that his existence was needed.

The depth of magic and its importance in this book were described well. I would rate this book a 5 out of 5 as it captured my attention and kept it until the end. I truly felt like I was part of the universe and wanted to dive in further. I was disappointed when the book was over and am looking forward to reading the next book in the series as soon as it comes out.
