Review of The Wounded Sky
Astria, a Rider, collapsed from her dragon, Vandrare, after reaching the South. She landed in a small village known as the College of Singers. This was a shock to those who saw the dragon, as dragons have not been seen in the South for ages. Astria had left her home in the far north, Invernell, in search of a cure. She’d been poisoned by the barbarians who tore her world apart and took everything she cared about. She and her dragon partner, Zephyr, are slowly dying as the poison is gradually creeping into their hearts. She left Zephyr at Invernell and made haste to seek their cure. But the barbarians hunt for her, and Vandrare’s presence has drawn the attention of the people of the South. Can Astria find the cure before it is too late?
The Wounded Sky by Ray Strong is a captivating fantasy story about a female protagonist who is thrust into a new world with no idea of what is in store for her, but she is determined to get what she wants, come what may. Astria's character is amazing. She is this strong female protagonist that readers would enjoy. She is a brave female lead with a good heart, and through her various adventures, I could feel her strong pain and her desperate desire to find a cure before it was too late. I loved how the author created this realistic epic fantasy story. The book portrays resilience, friendship, sacrifice, greed, and war. Senekx Kurak, the Quarajii (barbarian) War Chief, is a ruthless man and is Astria's enemy. His greedy ambition is to use the dragons to take control of Juro and make the world fall at his feet. Will he succeed? I enjoyed the surprising turn of events in the story, and the action scenes kept me excited and intrigued. The book is the second installment in the Dragons' War series, which can be read as a standalone.
The positive aspect of this book was the great teamwork between Tor the Giant, Ash the Dwarf, and Astria. I loved that she wasn't alone in her journey and she had these strangers who later became her friends. I enjoyed these trio performances in Soetal and Branwyn. The funny conversations between Tor and Ash sometimes cracked me up. It was always amusing to watch these two in my mind's eye. I admired how brave Astria was; even after being severely injured, she couldn’t leave her friends. She was ready to sacrifice her life for them. There was nothing to dislike about this interesting fantasy story. The book was flawlessly edited. If you are a fan of fantasy, then this book is for you. The book took me on a long ride of intrigue, which is why I will rate it five out of five stars.
