[Following is an official OnlineBookClub.org review of "Prototype" by Alfreda Bailey.]
People have created domes for the safety of the planet. Unfortunately, caste systems have become prevalent, resulting in riots and rebels. Living in the dilapidated and darkened area of the dome, Gayle struggles to keep her son safe. Every evening, they must hide to avoid the cleanse teams including them in the mass slaughter of undesirable people. Divine Cybernetics offers Gayle and David a free home in Uptown if they test their new service bots. Guardian Gabriel arrives, and Gayle is impressed by his human characteristics.
Dr. Gregory, the creator of the bots, has kept a secret from Divine Cybernetics and his assistant, Dr. Cotes. His six creations are supposed to be perfect humans. What he didn’t count on was the varied personalities each would present. The obvious emotional bond Gabriel has developed with Gayle and David makes Dr. Cotes suspicious. When Guardian Delilah goes rogue, a battle of wills between Divine Cybernetics and the Dome Council will cause massive losses for everyone.
Prototype is a science fiction thriller that explores the idea of a perfect human being created in a laboratory. What does a perfect human look like? That would be a matter of opinion in terms of appearance. Dr. Gregory’s vision of the perfect human was a cybernetic creation without emotion and illness. Including several character views created a vivid canvas of personal interactions between the guardians and their families. It was easy to see the difference between the groups and what motivated each character. My favorite character was Guardian Gabriel. His genuine feelings and expressions made his character relatable.
Several improvements could enhance the quality of this novel. I encountered over ten errors and two pages that were identical. Another round of editing would be beneficial. My second suggestion was the death of many of the characters in a short amount of time. There are several scenes where the death toll is high, but I didn’t understand why the character killed the people in the scene.
I rate Prototype three out of five stars. I lowered the score because of the editing and the senseless deaths. The exceptional character development brought the story to life. Adding supernatural abilities to the guardians increased their appeal. The analogy of a hill effectively illustrates the social divide among the residents of Uptown, Midtown, and Downs. The people at the top of the hill were wealthy, and those at the bottom were criminals and poor.
Prototype will appeal to fans of science fiction thrillers that challenge man’s ability to create a perfect human. Graphic violence and death could be overwhelming for younger people. I recommend this book to mature readers. Should man define human perfection, or is it better for everyone to be different?
