This week I had the fortune of reviewing Superhighway by Alex Fayman. This is a sci-fi book that would appeal even to those people who aren't fans of the genre, like me. Action, romance, mystery, and technology are all ingredients that made this book a great read.

Alex Fine is preparing to leave the orphanage in Los Angeles where he grew up. His troubled and sad childhood makes him realize that education is his only ticket to a better future, but as he is about to leave for college Alex discovers that he can travel through the Internet and manipulate data archived in any computer system. He takes this unique opportunity to change his dull life, and after becoming a billionaire, he decides to use his abilities to help others. In his pursuit of being a digital Robin Hood, he makes many mistakes; mistakes that lead to him being wanted by the CIA and the Russian mob. His new life of freedom becomes a deadly game of cat and mouse that will take great sacrifice to survive.

The book starts a little slow with a general overview of Alex’s story as an orphan and how this has led him to be an introverted, quiet guy. After discovering his abilities, his character shifts, and we see Alex change into a more confident and reckless person. At this point, the action that followed got me hooked. Every time I thought things were going to settle, something unexpected would happen. Alex’s superpower to travel through the internet was very neat, but what I appreciated the most was how the author made it sound so real through his excellent writing. I could picture what was happening very clearly; descriptions were very detailed, but smoothly integrated within the plot, and the pace steadily increased as I read.

The credibility of the characters was a strong point. Fayman doesn’t only describe their differences in age, culture and social status, but he focuses on their thoughts, feelings, and flaws, making it easy for me to empathize with them. I particularly enjoyed how Alex Fine is a typical teenager with normal teenager problems rather than a flawless superhero. He reminds me of myself at his age in that despite his good heart, he lets his emotions cloud his mind, and his impulsiveness leads him to take actions he later regrets.

I have two critiques for this book. I found it odd that an inexperienced and introverted teenager could suddenly be so bold in his relationships with all the girls he meets. I also noted how the book describes him as highly intelligent, yet some of his actions don’t reflect this, and the mistakes he makes are the kind that as a reader you wouldn’t expect from this type of character.

This book was definitely worthy of my time, so I rate it 4 out of 4 stars. One of the beauties of a good book is realizing that you are entirely wrapped up in it, and that’s what happened to me with Superhighway. The story was brilliant and catchy; the events involved me so much emotionally that I found myself wanting to slap, encourage, or warn Alex at times. The ending surprised me positively, and I can’t wait to find out more in the next book. I would recommend this read to older teens and adults due to some violent and sexual content.
