Superhighway by Alex Fayman is an extraordinary sci-fi fantasy that takes readers deep into the unknown universe of cyber technology. Our protagonist, Alex Fine, is a teenage boy with a mysterious past. An unexpected event at his foster home starts a series of events that would alter his future forever. Alex discovers that he has the ability to transport himself as data through the internet and reemerge anywhere in the world. As he is experimenting with this newfound freedom, he discovers that he is able to tap into databases anywhere. A world of data is now at his fingertips to absorb, alter, or eliminate. Endless possibilities await.

I rate this book 4 out of 4 stars. The premise for the story, teleportation via electronic data conversion, is an intriguing concept. The author provided a plausible explanation for how such a feat could be accomplished. These explanations are not provided too early in the story, though. The reader is drawn into this supernatural fairy tale as the main character tries to uncover the truth about his past, explore the breadth of his abilities, and make choices for his future.

Because the story is told from the first person point of view of Alex Fine, the reader is able to better understand the character. The author crafts a complex individual that has suffered from rejection and loss throughout his young life. After he discovers his abilities, he uses this troubled past as motivation to right the wrongs of the world. This modern Robin Hood personality is an endearing quality. Alex’s youthful naivety quickly leads him into trouble. With his lack of experience but big heart, Alex is an underdog that I hope is able to find his way.

The author provides beautifully detailed descriptions of the settings throughout the story as well. The ability to provide so much detail through a first person point of view without detracting from the plot is a testimony to the remarkable skills of the author. The different locations were easily visualized and exotic. Each place contributed to the plot and were essential to the character development. This book has potential as a book-to-film adaptation.

I offer caution for young adult readers and teenagers. The book does have adult content, sexual depictions, and drug and alcohol use. Aside from that, I feel that anyone that enjoys science fiction or technology will love this book. Technology has allowed us to access all parts of the world at a single click of a mouse. The internet provides us with a steady stream of information at our fingertips. Transportation has evolved enabling us to travel great distances in little time. This book weaves all these accomplishments and thrusts them into the world of science fiction with digital speed.
