The Lands of Grome: A place where magical creatures lived amongst humans and which is filled with magic and adventure. There, is also where the well known hero the "Fist Wielder" resides and adventures. With his firm passion to conquer evil, yet his past actions and mistakes never leaving him. How will this hero fare the many trials ahead.
The book Fish Wielder by J.R.R.R. (Jim) Hardison features adventurous, action filled and humorous themes that gives a hearty feeling. The hero, Thoral and his fish companion, Bradfast, journey together to wipe out as much evil as possible, facing trials and obtaining treasures along the way. However Thoral's secret past continues to take a toll on him and with a new love interest and disaster on its way he is determine to push through, for he is Thoral Mighty Fist.
This book is quite peculiar which is what grasp my interest. The way the story is told gives a nostalgic feeling of when older folks would tell tales and stories to youngsters. Its approach to humor is a bit different from the usual, mostly consisting of sarcasm, stupidity and luck. The main characters are an odd pair yet complement each other well, the hero, surprisingly, being emotional and irrational while the fish being wise and decisive. What I like most about the story is the way the author slowly reveals Thoral's past and why he is in his current situation and how it intertwines with his future. Yet it never strays from the plot and keeps your interest as to what more the story holds.
When I started reading the story I thought that there was an error with the title of the book as it seem to confirm that it should be "Fist Wielder". However after reading for a while it slowly clears up the hidden humor in giving it the title "Fish Wielder". What I dislike most about the book is that the hero is always in a near death experience and always ironically lucky to escape and turn the tables. It's not that it's bad but it's unpredictable and divert from the strategic way that I am familiar with. I also dislike that the hero is a bit too emotional. But I guess that these factors add to the humor of the story.
I rate this book 4 out of 4 because its literature language was fun and easy to understand. It was also well written with no errors or mistakes. I do not rate it any less because although I'm not a fan of humor themed books, its peculiarity and unpredictability really kept my interest and motivated me to continue reading. I surely recommend this book to every and anyone.
