Review of A Black Swan Event
A Black Swan Event by Ray Seven is a science fiction story about space and aliens. Neal Baxter is a commodity broker in Minneapolis. He's having a really bad day at work, as his client lost about $500,000. So he goes to his cabin in Wisconsin to relax with Betty, his dog. He was in the backyard when an alien spaceship crashed in. Inside is a creature that looks like a lobster wearing a space suit, and shortly after, a bigger alien ship shows up and fights the bad aliens. Neal gets pulled onto the ship by accident, along with his dog, Betty. Over the following year, he transformed from captive to crew member and then to a hero when he single-handedly damaged an enemy warship. Neal was appointed the first human ambassador to an alien confederation. He and his dog, Betty, returned to Earth as ambassadors for humanity’s entry into the galactic community. But what will happen when they arrive? Will Earth accept the aliens? Is there truly peace, or more conflict ahead?
I really liked the development of Neal as a character; he is not a superhero or anything special, but when a crazy event happens, he doesn’t panic but thinks fast and solves the problem. This proactiveness made me like him so much as a character because his behavioural pattern felt real and non-fictional.
I have a few things about the book that made me pause while reading. Some narratives are sometimes dragged out, and some parts, like the alien confederation, are not fully explored; this made it hard to connect with some discussions in the book. For instance, after Neal got on the spaceship, the events that followed stretched too long without major progress in the plot; he was only making friends, getting medical checks, etc. Towards the end, some parts were rushed. When Neal gets to an alien planet called Chywa, everything happens really fast, and he just moves on. Thus, I will rate this book 4 out of 5 stars. I recommend this book to everyone who loves sci-fi and adventurous books.
