Thoral Mighty Fist was on his last leg, wishing for death to come and sweep him away when his long time companion Bradfast, a talking Koi fish about twelve inches tall, convinces the Fist Wielder to embark upon the adventure of a lifetime. Mayhap the adventure of multiple lifetimes. Thoral and Bradfast set out into the magical world of Grome intent upon relieving the land of the stresses associated with utter and eminent destruction. Along the way, the pair encounters a cast of colorful and eccentric friends as well as a score more enemies as they quest for the Great Pudding of Power. This is the chronicles of Thoral Mighty Fist, the Fish Wielder.

First things first, this was one of the most enjoyable books I have read in a long time. I find it very refreshing to see a story be able to laugh at itself and its genre, as this title by J.R.R.R. (Jim) Hardison does on numerous occasions. There are certain things one comes to expect from the fantasy genre and The Fish Wielder has them all and then some. I would recommend this title to anyone who enjoys an epic tale of fantasy. Or to anyone who enjoys an epic joke of an epic tale of fantasy.

I rate The Fish Wielder 4 out of 4 stars on the basis that this was a delightful read. The story telling is top notch, it paints the picture of the world of Grome perfectly. There were also very few grammatical errors, which I always find appealing. Truth be told, I only found one mistake; the word “squeeze” was used instead of “squeezed.” It may well have been a typo. Or there may be some rule of grammar at work that I am blissfully unaware of. Either way, I was thoroughly impressed with the quality of writing.

Perhaps my favorite parts of The Fish Wielder are the character development and overall descriptive prowess of the author. Such a clear picture of every character, no matter how insignificant to the story they may have been, was presented. It’s not just the people either. The world of Grome is laid before you as clear as a diamond in a goat’s rear end. Throughout every scene you will feel as if you were a fly upon the shoulders of the companions as they adventure into the various regions of the land in hopes to complete their quest. Not to mention the inclusion of a map of Grome within the book.

J.R.R.R (Jim) Hardison has wonderfully crafted an epic tale of fantasy that is by no means afraid to laugh at itself or the fantasy genre. That being said, I cannot recommend this book to you if you take life too seriously or if you prefer your fantasy talking koi fish free and without powerful puddings. On the other hand, if you wish to see a barbarian muck about with a fish on his shoulder while looking for a pudding, this book is for you.
