The Fish Wielder, written by J.R.R.R. (Jim) Hardison, is an epic story about Thoral, the Fist Wielder. He was a man celebrated as the mighty, barbarian and overly hygienic hero of the land of Grome. However, the story started at the point in which Thoral has grown tired of living and with alcohol as the only thing that can satisfies him. Irate with Thoral being a drunkard, his bestfriend, Bradfast, the talking koi, tried convincing him to take on an adventure. Believing that the adventure they will be having might end his life, Thoral, together with Bradfast and his horse, Warlordhose, partake on this journey. Through the course, they have stumbled upon an evil sorcerer who happened to be connected to a cult that has an evil plan of destroying all of Grome. Knowing these, Thoral, together with his companions, has sworn that with all of his might will bring the cult down. However, the task will never be easy. Up against different monsters and dark magic, Thoral and his companions, will pave their way to stop the destruction of Grome. The supposed adventure to end his life ended as becoming a reason for him continue living so that he can redeem himself and protect the people he cared. However, doubt on himself engulfed him as he took each step of the way against the cult. Secrets connected to his path unfold as he struggled to fight.
Definitely, the book will bring you to another world such as Narnia and Middle Earth of Lord of the Rings. However, I doubt that one will fall in love with how the Grome was describe in the book. The author does not elaborate on how magnificent the world he has created; no superfluous words used to describe it. However, as one browsed through the book’s pages, you will fall in love with this imaginary land. You will feel like you are actually touring around Grome while embarking on adventures with Thoral and his friend.
The characters are very unique in every kind of way that it is not very hard to remember their names (except the flying squirrel's full name for it was very long) even the name of the most side of all side characters. Thoral and Brad were my favorite characters. You can actually feel the connection between them; the sense of best friendship that they have. Moreover, these two are hilariously funny.
The story line of Fish Wielder is not predictable at all. A real page turner. Once you finish reading a chapter and guess that this and that will happen in the next, but after reading following chapter, you are wrong. Unpredictable. Moreover, plot twist are insanely laid out. In each revelation, you can't help but just to get shocked.
No doubt that I will be recommending this book for it was a really good read. Did I already mention that this book is not just a fantasy book but also a one heck of a comedy book? Okay, I just did right? Yes. This book will surely make you laugh hard because I did laugh very hard to the point that I waked up my sleeping roommate and his girlfriend (or so I thought or my laughter interrupted other things, that we don't know). The book is full of puns and jokes which even if sometimes are repetitive enough, you will just end up falling for it yet again and still laugh. I will be giving a rating of 4 out of 4 stars for this. Why? Because this book as Thoral, Fist Wielder said "What is that word, that word one exclaims after a particularly shocking incident? It is a word that can also be used to halt the progress of a horse.”
“Whoa?”
“Whoa…,”
People who loved fantasy books must read this. It is not childish at all for there are battle scenes that were pretty gruesome, an adult taste I must say.
PS: Don't be deceived by the title, it's one of Hardison's pun.
