The Elf Coup by Jordan David is the third book in The Magi Charter series. Once again, chaos has erupted in the North Pole. The creature Krampus is on the verge of destroying Christmas by shutting down production and causing terror amongst the elves. Meanwhile, Mistletoe Green has begun to activate his plan to depose Santa and name himself Elf Czar. The only thing seemingly standing in Mistletoe’s way is Noel. As Noel learns more about his past, he realizes he is destined to bring down Mistletoe’s diabolical plans. Will he master the art of rune magic before it’s too late?
Once again, Jordan David has delivered a wonderful tale full of holiday fun and excitement. Every book in the series continues to grow and evolve, and this entry is the best one yet. It’s obvious that David takes inspiration from many popular works such as Star Wars and Harry Potter; he occasionally borrows certain elements and adapts them. He has also graduated into writing epic battles full of action and suspense. I really enjoyed reading Noel’s conflicts with Mistletoe and experiencing every explosive surprise as they battled.
Another new addition to this book is working with multiple character perspectives. The first two books were mainly from Noel’s perspective, but David has begun to experiment with other characters such as Mistletoe, Evergreen, and even Krampus. I particularly enjoyed Evergreen’s passages and thought they were surprisingly well executed and feminine. She seemed like a real female character that I could relate to. David’s prior books have always tended to lean more masculine. I never minded, but it was obvious to me that the books were written from the perspective of a young male. His ability to mature into writing a convincing female perspective was quite interesting to me. I’m really enjoying reading the improvement and maturity that comes with every new book in the series.
There are still a few minor mistakes throughout the book. The errors didn’t diminish my enjoyment, but they recur repeatedly. The most common errors were mixing up “liar” with “lair” and “gapped” with “gaped”. Otherwise, the overall structure and spelling have improved with the author’s age.
I will gladly rate this book 4 out of 4 stars for enjoyable storytelling, convincing female characters, and epic battles. I also loved Krampus and the humorous passages involving a senile elf. Teens and young adults should find this book especially enjoyable. I highly recommend every book in this series. Once you start, you won’t be able to stop reading them.
