Roan: Volume 1
Roan is a book that will appeal to all ages 16+. It would especially appeal to senior citizens, teens and young adults. This book is strongly recommended for lovers of Tolkien, Pratchett and George R. R. Martin. It is 600 pages and divided into short chapters with action packed endings.
Roan is the story of a young man who is homeschooled by his mother, who is battling cancer and he copes by playing the tin whistle in a local Irish pub. One night he meets a mysterious biker who slips something into a drink and convinces him to try it. He goes outside where the biker bites his hand and tells him regretfully that he doesn't have long to live. A beautiful woman treats and binds his hand, which is actually a blessing, and tells him that he has a choice to make and that it won't be an easy choice. She then tells him that he needs to hurry home. Thinking that his mother needs him, he races home in time to say goodbye to his mother. Her final instructions are for him to return her body to her family in Wisconsin. Being near death, he arrives in Wisconsin where he begins a fascinating journey into a battle against an ancient evil that will force him to make decisions that will impact not only his future but maybe that of the world.
The author blends folklore, mythology and Irish culture which creates realistic characters and vivid descriptiins of other worlds or dimensions. There are numerous twists and turns with the right amount of realism when legenday meets reality. Conor is easy to relate to because of the emotional struggles he goes through. The doubts and confusion along with a myriad of other emotions he goes through follows his progression from a young teenager to the story's hero. His feelings progress at a realistic rate which make him likeable. I love the author's characterizations and their abilities as well as the reasons for what they do.
Some of the descriptions of the characters and places may cause some concern because of their references to certain subjects. However, this is a story of the battle of good and evil.
I rate this book a 4 out of 4 because it is a promising start to a magical fantasy series. The author blended a lot of elements to create an original and believable book. Thia book shows good research into myths and legends. Roan: The Tales Of Conor Archer is an interesting page turner that keeps you reading to the very last page to discover who or what he turns into and why.
