Alex Fine has the world at his fingertips. Literally. He discovers that he has a unique ability to travel through computer wires and networks all around the world. This also gives him access to huge amounts of information, as he can “download” any database he comes across and is able to access that material at any time. Alex was just a regular kid stuck in the foster system until he is thrown into this new, complex world. As he learns to navigate through this foreign landscape, he must confront intense issues involving morality, love, death, and family.
Superhighway by Alex Fayman is the first book in the Superhighway Trilogy and follows Alex Fine as he learns to hone his new-found skill. He realizes that the choices he makes can have far-reaching, and even deadly, consequences. His life becomes even more complex when he meets two others with the same ability. As he finds out more about himself and his power, he is finally able to learn about the parents that abandoned him at birth. Alex will discover just how far he is willing to go and how much he has to risk for answers.
This novel is very well-written and is easy to read. There were just a couple of small grammatical errors throughout the book, but it is evident that this was professionally edited. Alex Fayman did an excellent job of character development and was able to make this sci-fi novel believable. I liked that he did not try to explain every single scientific aspect involved, as that may have become overwhelming and too complex. Fayman’s descriptions of the various scenes and locations throughout the book were very vivid, which made it quite easy to picture everything. The book flowed well and didn’t seem to have any inconsistencies or missing details.
I would rate Superhighway 4 out of 4 stars because it is well-written, professionally edited, and an overall enjoyable read. It was action-packed, full of emotion, and hard to put down. The premise of the book is a unique concept that was well thought out and well developed. The characters are easy to relate to and empathize with. This book is a page-turner and keeps the reader guessing with some unexpected twists and turns throughout.
I believe most science fiction fans will enjoy this book, but I think it will appeal to non-sci-fi readers as well. I would consider this a good coming-of-age story about a boy that finds himself with a superpower and the implications that it has on his life. I am greatly looking forward to reading the next book in the series.
