I can easily say that Fish Wielder by J.R.R.R. (Jim) Hardison is a fantastic book blending hilarious absurdity and narration style in a unique fantastic way. Well comically written to make the story as ludicrous and preposterous as possible without making the reader feel for anything out of place at all. The characters fit perfectly to produce the parody effect the author intended luring the reader to keep following on till the end.

The book describes the adventures and exploration of Thoral Mighty Fist and his best friend Brad who is an air breathing talking fish on the fantasy and magical world of Grome. Thoral’s costume is a pirate style with a belt to hold the magic sword which was given to him by his mentor Yiz, and some velvet pouches of magic items. Thoral is a well-built muscular man with his super cat reflexes and prodigious fighting skills with a weak memory, who spends mostly in sorrows, drinking or wandering everywhere for treasure and passing the time. He is both gloomy and active.

He accidentally saves the elf princess Nalweegie battling Necrogrond and thus makes friends with the elves. Thoral battles the ruthless Heartless one, the dark brothers and many monsters to fulfill his swears he had sworn. And forms “The fellowship of pudding” to finally seek the “Great pudding of power” which was brewed more than a 1000 years ago by a dark pudding mage Glurpgrond to dominate the world.

The best and high pitch humor I liked in the story is about the conversation Thoral and Brad has with Trenton the gatekeeper of Reefma to trap a dark brother priest.

We could see many fabulous and incredulous revelations in the second half where several of Thoral’s past and magic things are revealed, which no one living in Grome knows about makes the core of the parody. The way Thoral comes out with a solution to solve the puzzle of disposing the immortal Necrogrond makes something of a flashpoint.

Things I dint like though was the lack in detailing of the different places and landscapes to generate vivid memories, and the way the story ends abruptly without giving full satisfaction and leaving loose fray ends.

I rate this book 4 out of 4 stars. The Fish Wielder is simple to read and a mind relaxing anytime read. I will recommend this to anyone who is fun living, care free and likes fantasy fiction with parody. There is no apparent explicit adult content but just a wisp of romance, so I will suggest to any age group. At the same time I will also caution the people who read only serious type stories to stay away from this.
