Superhighway by Alex Fayman is the first book in the Superhighway trilogy. It is a science fiction thriller novel. The story follows the adventures of the protagonist, Alexander(Alex) Fine. The author writes the story from Alex's perspective.
Alex Fine was eighteen-year-old when he discovered he had an unusual gift. He could travel through the internet using network cables. Before this, he had spent most of his childhood in the LA County Department of Child Welfare. When he discovers his gift, Alex sets off on an adventure across the world. He decides to make a living by stealing from criminals. He seals his new lifestyle by making an oath to help others once he learns to help himself. His first victim is a Dutch mobster, Henry Langhout. As planned, Alex breaks into Henry Langhout's property and steals some money and an expensive watch. He believes he got away free and clear. Much later, Alex asks a hotel receptionist out on a date. Coincidentally, one of Langhout's men recognizes the watch Alex has chosen to wear . It is the same one he stole from Langhout. When Alex and Anna leave the restaurant, they are attacked and taken by Langhout's men. Will Alex and Anna escape from the Dutch mobster? Will Alex's gift be discovered? Will he continue his life of stealing from criminals? Will he ever trust someone with the secret of his gift? All these questions will be answered in this amazing book.
The author highlights many themes in this amazing story. The main theme I encountered in this book was trauma. Alex Fine is raised in a foster home for most of his life. He was adopted by a few families, but they eventually returned him to the foster home. That was a traumatic upbringing not only for him but for others in foster homes. He experiences grief and loss in this story, and he has to live with the knowledge that it was his fault. Another major theme I encountered was crime. Alex seeks out criminals in order to steal from them. I read how Henry Langhout murdered people who got in his way, and I read how Alex almost became one of the murdered victims. I encountered themes like guilt, deception, trust, kindness, and justice. The author uses these themes masterfully to not only make the characters interesting but to also make the plot memorable.
The character development in this book was amazingly written. At the beginning of his journey, Alex Fine is a poor foster kid with hopes of going to college. When he discovers his gift, Alex makes a drastic life choice that thrusts him into a dangerous life. Alex can be described as a smart, kindhearted boy. He shows this when he gives the money he stole to the needy. The author portrays criminals perfectly. Henry Langhout and his brother, Vincent, are scary people to encounter. They are even scarier people to cross. They were the book's first antagonists. The author uses the characters masterfully to keep the plot captivating throughout the book.
I rated the book 4 out of 4 stars. This is because I found the plot captivating and highly addictive. I enjoyed myself following Alex on his Robin Hood adventures, and Alex’s gift was enjoyable to follow. I did not encounter any spelling or grammatical error. This led me to believe that the book was professionally edited. The only thing I did not like about this book was how short it was.
I would recommend this book to all science fiction fans. The book would also appeal to action thriller fans. This was a perfect introduction to what promises to be a fantastic series. I look forward to reading the sequel.
