Roan: The Tales of Conor Archer is a thrilling science fiction novel. As a huge fan of this literary genre, I was very anxious to read this book. I was not disappointed at all and I truly loved it! Roan has furthermore been very well acknowledged by other readers around the world and received numerous prices. To name just a few it won “2014 global ebook gold award” and “2014 dragonfly award for young adult children”.
Conor Archer appears at first to be a typical teenager living in the Chicago suburban area. The story begins tragically with his mother becoming sick, and despite Conor taking care of her as much as he can, she dies fairly quickly. Prior to her death, she told her son that if anything was to happen to her, he should stay with his aunt Emily in a small town called Tinker’s Grove. In rural Wisconsin, this place has been created by Irish immigrants in the 19th century. Conor realises quickly that there is something mysterious about this place. Some strange events and situations cannot be explained. We then discover that Conor is not a normal teenager and that instead, he has some supernatural powers. Conor’s journey begins when he realises that Tinker’s Grove is under threat, and he allies with new friends to bring back peace.
The writing style of the author E. R. Barr is sophisticated, and this book has been exceptionally well edited. This made the book very easy to read despite a complex story rich in characters and creatures. E. R. Barr excels in describing in details landscapes and character’s feelings. I was able to immerse deeply in the book as if I was living all the adventures alongside Conor and his allies. The death of his mother was particularly well written and moving.
I would classify Roan in the young adult category. However the story has also some dark and tragic passages, and therefore I believe that older readers would also love it.
This is one of the best science fiction books that I have ever read. For all J. K. Rowling’s fans, I found some similarity between Harry Potter and Conor Archer. Living a fantasy world, both characters lost their mother and would dream of having a normal life. In my mind, it makes both characters very relatable.
I highly recommend this book to all readers who enjoy fantasy books, and all those who have an interest in Irish mythology. E. R. Barr is, without doubt, a very talented science fiction writer. It is worth noting that this a relatively long book with 570 pages. I personally did not get bored at any moment and enjoy long books, but some readers might prefer shorter ones. Lastly, I strongly hope that this book will be adapted in a movie someday, I am sure it will be a hit!
Thus I rate this amazing and thrilling book 4 out of 4 stars.
