Demon heart by David Crane is an intriguing, moment-capturing novel set in modern-day Japan. He really captured the Japanese culture, including its history and fantasy. In the novel, he described some intricate details with a well descriptive choice of words that make a reader not only see the words but also feel the emotions of the characters. It is an excellent novel I would recommend for mature readers due to the descriptions of violence, blood and gore in some parts, though those really added to the capturing quality of the novel.

The novel centers around a cop from Osaka police department named Naoko Kitamura who turns out to be more than what the eyes sees. She learns from a young age that she is a demon-hybrid, a quality passed down to only the females of her family line. From the beginning she experiences love, anger and heartbreak and sees the struggle between good and evil as just a woman before the awakening of her demon. As part human and part demon whom she calls up at will, she takes us through a series of events that portrays both the insecurities of men and their insatiable desire for power within and outside their control. Keeping her secret from both family and friends and driven by her love for her country she fights hard and emerges victorious above evil as she follows her mother’s footstep before and after her death.

Naoko Kitamura is a really fascinating character who not dwelling so much on her demon part, still faced some human challenges and found the strength to thrive through them and also not minding her human weaknesses did what she thought right even if the consequences were dire. She is a character who really cares for those close to her and is ready to protect or avenge them whenever the case arises.
David Crane really drove into the Japanese culture reflected in Naoko and though I personally don’t know much about their culture, history and tradition I guess he has helped shine some light in that area in a pleasant and interesting way.

The book was well constructed and I noticed only a few errors which were mainly typographical. So I rate this book a 4 out of 4 because it is simply amazing and delightful to read and I highly recommend it for those readers who are looking for a good sci-fi novel with a touch of reality.
