To me, I would say there are some current issues that have been delved into by the author. For instance, just to name a few, there is racism, sexual abuse, etcetera.
There were a lot of social issues such as racism, domestic abuse, parental negligence, homophobia, sexual assault to name a few. I really like how the author was able to weave all these into such a good story.

The author explored a lot of social issues, but the issue of racism was vividly presented in the book. We are in the modern era, yet we are chained with the old concept of our skin colour.

I think the issue of single motherhood, and how tough is it for everyone involved has been highlighted really well in this novel. Further, the issue to apathy and sheer loneliness faced by elderly people due to the constraints of modern day relationships and work life has been touched upon.

A challenge of being a single mom, finance as a hindrance of living a dream, the deep sorrow of moms who lost their kids. Are others.

I think the author highly voiced racism. She talked about things some people are afraid of saying out loud. In addition, talking about trauma was also helpful. I, however, think she could have expounded on trauma.

Many of the social issues that were discussed in the novel are also issues in today's society. Such as racism, domestic violence, poverty etc. The author portrayed these topics very nicely and thoughtfully!

In addition to the aforementioned, I would say negligence was part of it. It could be shown in Kayala lonely life.

Add to that one-parent households where the kids practically have to raise themselves and then get dragged into the wrong friend groups because of lack of love/attention.

I think you have mentioned two of the major topics that were focused on. One topic that you did not mention was the "single mom" story line. That was also a very important aspect of the story.
